May 16 Webinar: Focus on Teens

In many school districts across the county, chronic absence spikes in middle or high school. But being in class every day is even more critical for teens. Instruction is fast-pace and lessons build on one another. Research shows that middle school attendance is a better predictor of high school graduation than test scores.

How can we encourage teens to persist in middle and high school? Join Attendance Works, United Way Worldwide and our Attendance Awareness partners for the webinar, Nurture Dreams: Ensure Students Feel Safe, Supported, Connected and Engaged, on May 16 at 2pm ET.

Our presenters, from Fordham Leadership Academy, the Center for Supportive Schools and the United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania, will share how they cultivate positive relationships with youth and identify and remove attendance barriers. Their efforts show how to move beyond simply taking roll to encouraging students to persist in going to school so they have an opportunity to reach for their dreams.

During the webinar we’ll show results from surveys that reflect how students think about being in school. Drawing from surveys by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Gallup and GetSchooled, we’ll share information about student health, school climate and why kids miss school.
